Art Wynwood returns for its ninth edition to Downtown Miami →

Art Wynwood, the premier winter contemporary art fair produced by Art Miami, will return for its ninth edition at Herald Plaza on Biscayne Bay in Downtown Miami. The fair will open this Thursday, February 13th with a VIP Preview benefiting the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami before opening to the public over Presidents Day Weekend - Friday, Feb 14th through Monday, Feb 17th, 2020.

The fair offers collectors the opportunity to acquire curated works from emerging talent in the contemporary market, mid-career artists, and blue-chip contemporary, post-war and modern masters and features an elevated array of murals, pop surrealism, street art and other genres.

Mike Foldes: As a native of Ghana, had you traveled much before coming to the States? And, if you had visited the States previously, what brought you here and where did you go?

Na Chainkua Reindorf: I traveled a lot as a child. Two of my mother’s four siblings lived in London, UK. So I spent a lot of Christmases with my cousins. I visited the States for the first time in 2009 though. I was here in Maine for a week, as part of an exchange program that my high school did with a prep high school. I eventually returned to the States after graduating high school to attend Grinnell College, a small liberal arts college in Grinnell, Iowa.

Photorealist paintings create a dizzying effect that is itself oddly pleasurable—what at first glance might appear to be a large-scale photograph reveals itself to be a meticulously rendered depiction of a street corner, a face, or a still life, and the eye vacillates back and forth, absorbing the whole while dazzling at the individual brushstrokes.

For Binghamton, New York, native Anthony Brunelli, the desire to push the limits of photorealism has been the guiding principle of his 25-year career. Brunelli broke into the scene in the 1990s with his industrial cityscapes of upstate New York, in which he pioneered some of the earliest photorealist panoramas.

Over the years he has brought his meticulous touch to scenes from around the world, from Asian marketplaces to European urban intersections. Now, “Anthony Brunelli: In Retrospect,” an exhibition at New York’s Louis K. Meisel Gallery, is taking a look back at how his photorealist cityscapes have developed over the decades. On the occasion of the exhibition, we caught up with Brunelli, who told us about the influence of Chuck Close on his work and his unexpected alternate dream job.

The 2019 edition welcomes new exhibitors including: Everard Read, Cape Town making their Miami debut with a selection of contemporary artists including Liza Groble, who through her participatory environments, explores the interactions between the physical presence of the viewer, the space in which the work is experienced and the constructed form. Chimento Contemporary from Los Angeles is presenting the work of Pamela Smith Hudson. Pamela’s stylistic abstractions explore her own city living experience through an arch of topographical minimalistic work. Gallery SU: from Seoul will present the work of Fay Shin. metroquadro from Torino will present the new body of work by artist Monique Rollins. HOFA Gallery from London/Los Angeles/Mykonos, presents contemporary artists including Maria Agureeva, whose work shows how the body becomes a hybrid space where materiality of flesh is connected with an individual consciousness and identity. Galerie Koo from Hong Kong is presenting the work of French-Swiss Amélie Ducommun, whose work lies mainly in questioning of memory, perception of landscape and the interrelationship of natural elements. AHA Fine Art from New York is presenting the work of Jen Dwyer, a contemporary artist who makes socially engaged multidisciplinary work in relation to current social issues. SMO Contemporary Art Ventures from Lagos is presenting the work of Nigerian artist Olumide Onadipe, one of Africa’s finest mixed media experimental artists today. Anthony Brunelli Fine Arts, from Binghamton is presenting a group of contemporary artists including British artist Jamie Salmon. From Santiago, Galeria Animal is presenting Pablo Benzo. Aurora Vigil-Escalera Art Gallery from Gijón will debut with work by Ismael Lagares, Pablo Armesto, Jorge Hernández among others.

Anthony Brunelli, a pioneering member of the new generation of American photorealists, focuses on capturing panoramic cityscapes. In “Anthony Brunelli: In Retrospect,” Louis K. Meisel Gallery presents a survey of his work over the last 25 years from his earliest paintings of his hometown of Binghamton, New York, to his later exploration of scenes from Asia and Europe. The large scale and hyper-realistic nature of the works truly captivate the viewer and bring them into the scenes.
