Artist’s Reception: Friday, October 5th, 6-9pm | Closing Reception: Friday, November 2nd, 6-9pm
About the exhibition:
Join us for our new exhibition this October as we explore the gathered materials and intimate dwellings of birds, as composed by artist and painter, Charlotte B. Heath. A resident of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Heath's botanical works are internationally recognized and have been exhibited across the United States. We are pleased to present her latest series, Avian Architecture.
In this series, Heath finds inspiration from the writings in Jennifer Ackerman's book, The Genius of Birds:
”Many bird species are highly social. They breed in colonies, bathe in groups, roost in congregations, forage in flocks. They eavesdrop. They argue. They cheat. They deceive and manipulate. They kidnap. They divorce. They display a strong sense of fairness. They give gifts. They play keep-away and tug-of-war with twigs, strands of Spanish moss, bits of gauze. They pilfer from their neighbors. They warn their young away from strangers. They tease. They share. They cultivate social networks. They vie for status. They kiss to console one another. They teach their young. They blackmail their parents. They summon witnesses to the death of a peer. They may even grieve.”
-Jennifer Ackerman, The Genius of Birds
Charlotte was born in rural southwestern Pennsylvania and is currently living on the Eastern Shore of Virginia where she operates a Boutique Hotel in addition to continuing her lifelong passion for painting.
Her artwork has been exhibited in international juried botanical shows from New York City to Seattle including a stop at the Weismann Museum in Minneapolis which was the first contemporary botanical art showing in a major museum in the United States. She was chosen for this honor along with forty-five other artists from around the world.
With a deep-rooted love for nature, painting the nest series for this show entitled “Avian Architecture” has been the most satisfying of her subjects thus far.
