BERTRAND MENIEL

French, b. 1961

Bertrand Meniel is an acclaimed contemporary French photorealist painter known for his strikingly detailed urban landscape paintings. Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, in 1961 and largely self-taught, Meniel began painting full-time in the late 1980s. Now based in the South of France, he has become internationally recognized for his luminous acrylic cityscapes that capture the geometry, signage, and atmosphere of modern urban life.

Meniel’s paintings often depict American city scenes—from Times Square’s neon lights to quiet suburban streets—rendered with extraordinary precision and depth. Using hundreds of photographic references, he constructs each composition with cinematic clarity, transforming everyday architecture into scenes of timeless stillness and visual poetry. His hyperrealistic paintings reflect both technical mastery and a deep sensitivity to light, color, and rhythm.

Since the 1990s, Meniel’s work has been widely exhibited in international surveys of photorealism and hyperrealism, including the landmark traveling exhibition “Hyperrealism: 50 Years of Painting” (2012–2017), which toured major museums in Europe and the United States. His paintings have also been featured at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Nassau County Museum of Art, and the Arnot Art Museum.

Bertrand Meniel continues to redefine the possibilities of contemporary realism. His work is highly sought after by collectors worldwide for its precision, vibrancy, and ability to reveal beauty in the everyday fabric of urban life.
